Online Learning? Not For Me

Having school done at home can be very challenging, especially if you are more of an in-person learner like myself.

With the COVID-19 pandemic, everything has gone virtual. This includes celebrations, religious gatherings, and especially classes. Every student has experienced online learning one way or another.

"Online learning is not the next big thing, it is the now big thing.” - Donna J. Abernathy

Online learning is good in some cases, but how does the student feel?

How I'm Handling It

Personally, I have online learning, I feel like I’m not learning much as compared to being there physically sitting in a classroom, taking notes during lectures, and being in a place where like-minded people are placed. This past school year has been tough for me. From family drama to losing friends and to even losing a loved one. All this stress has gotten to me to a point where I have self-doubt and low self-esteem.

I have to distract myself from thoughts and I have to distract myself with activities to keep my body in motion. I have been going out with friends, but not as much as usual. I do go to family parties, but not everyone is there or the atmosphere is different than usual. What keeps me going is the uncertainty of the next day.

I know this upcoming year will change slightly, that being that the State of California is aiming to reopen on June 15th. I am looking forward to that, but coming out of a pandemic, I am still cautious of my surroundings and others. I know that my actions will affect others and vice versa, but I just have to put the trust in myself and others.

Mental Health

A lot of students, especially this generation, are known to experience some sort of mental illness, whether self-diagnosed or clinically. Online school hasn't helped the students one bit. From being away from their friends and family to not indulging in the lesson plans set by the teacher or professor. Many students, including myself, have dug a hole that's somewhat hard to get out of. They've let the darkness overwhelm the light. Unfortunately many have taken the most precious thing in life away from themselves.

If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out to them; call them; let them know someone is there. There are many resources out there for you and for them. Below is a link to some resources I have found useful to myself and my friends and I hope they will be to you too.

Please, help me end the stigma and know that there are public resources available. Most importantly, know that there are people who do care, who do want to see a better day, who do want you to get help. #EndTheStigma #MentalHealthAwareness
